THE ROOTS OF UNHAPPINESS
By Lionel Ketchian

The roots of unhappiness are quite long and many. I found one that went quite deep and ran along the ground for 5 feet. I got most of it out but there were hundreds more to dig out. I am writing about my front yard. I thought it would be a good idea to cut back some bushes and extend my yard area over to the side. It sounded like a good objective at the time, but I had no idea how much work it entailed.

When you're not used to it, yard work is a lot of exertion. I don't know if it was that much easier when I was younger either. It doesn't seem like it's a lot of work when I thought I sized it all up. As soon as I got started I found out that it just might be a bit more work than I had initially imagined.

I really love being outdoors. I even like working outside. I guess the part that seems to make it difficult is running out of energy after working for a few hours. I began to wonder if I was ever going to get the work done before summer comes. Spring took its time getting here, but now that it seems to be here to stay the work comes with it. I just took a, "Let It Snow," sign down a week ago. My neighbor just mentioned to me that at least we don't have to shovel snow. I said I might have been better off with the snow shovel.

In case you are wondering about the title of this column, it really is about tree roots. I am just writing about my latest experiences. The latest book I'm reading is Walden, by Henry David Thoreau. I really enjoy reading his book and learning about his experiences while living in the woods. Maybe it has even got me feeling a little enthusiastic about doing all this work outside. It is just that when you have a desk job like I have, a shovel and rake is not something you are accustomed to using.

The whole experience is a great one. I think it is a perfect example of most things we do in life. We want something and then we dig up all the problems that come along with the thing we want. To eliminate the problem, we have to keep digging to find the root of the problem. Sometimes they are near the surface and sometimes they are deep down. If we keep working at it then we can get the roots out and smooth the surface. Once we have a level surface we can do anything we want with it.

In my case, I planted grass seed. In your case, you have to plant the seeds you want to grow. If you plant weed seeds, then you will get weeds. If you plant grass seeds then you'll get grass. It is very important to plant the type of seed you want to cultivate in your level growing area. It is much like your mind. What you plant there will grow. If you don't want something then don't plant it there so it will not grow. If you do see something growing that is not what you want then take it out. Dig it out by the roots if you must, but don't allow it to grow.

Unhappiness is much like that wild stuff growing all over the place. It is time to prune our thinking. It is time to plant new ideas and throw out the old dead and broken ones. They only stunt the growth of the new seeds you plant. You're thinking is the seed of happiness. Plant your new thoughts and prune your old ones. Things will start looking fresh and beautiful. I hope you'll find the roots of your unhappiness. Cut them and plant new seeds in their place. The next thing you know, you'll be outstanding in your field. You just have to be the gardener of your soul.
