Welcome My Dearest Friend!

Stephen Covey said:

"As long as you think the problem is out there, that very thought is the problem."

10 TOP SECRETS TO UNHAPPINESS & HAPPINESS!

UNHAPPINESS

1. People or situations do not cause you to be unhappy!

2. Unhappiness is the feeling that results from thinking and believing that something is making you unhappy.

3. Your thinking is what makes you believe that something can cause you to be unhappy.

4. Unhappiness is the feeling that things should be different than the way they are.

5. Thinking causes unhappiness by your reaction to what you believe has the power to make you unhappy.

6. Thinking that anything can cause you to be unhappy makes you experience fear.

7.The fear created by your thinking causes you to continue to think unhappily.

8. Fear of people or events from the past repeating themselves in the future creates unhappiness.

9. Being unhappy means that I can now prove to everyone, including myself, that when something bad happens, I can prove I do not agree with it by being unhappy.

10. If I wasn't unhappy about a bad event, then that would prove to the world I do not care and therefore I am not a good person.

HAPPINESS

1. Happiness is the realization, and the feeling that results from the knowledge, that nothing can make you happy or unhappy without choosing it for yourself, and thus allowing it to happen.

2. Happiness is the practice and habit of not letting anything become more important to you than your happiness.

3. Happiness is realizing your power and not living with powerlessness, which is unhappiness disguised as fear.

4. By being happy you face your fear and experience your true power.

5. Happiness is freedom from fear by letting go of the past, the termination of worrying about the future and as a result, embracing and enjoying the present.

6. Being happy is accepting things the way they are, facing uncertainty without fear and enjoying the present.

7. You can be happy in a bad situation, or in a situation that you do not agree with. When you choose to be unhappy, it does not change the situation for the better, while it can easily make the situation worse.

8. Being happy does not mean that you agree with a bad situation. It means that you are using happiness to maintain your power over the situation by maintaining peace of mind, with a higher level of awareness, to effectively deal with the problem and thereby exercise the most effective choice available to you in the moment.

9. Being happy, when people have problems, does not mean you don't care about the people or their problems, it means you really care about making the situation better, while making things better for the people involved as well.

10. Love can turn to hurt and then to hate if it is not returned. When you want happiness for another, you do it because you want them to be happy. And you do it unconditionally because you don't insist that they must give you happiness back. Happiness is all you need.

Thanks Lionel, for all your (for me) timely newsletters. I've written before, and each time it has been 'uncanny' how you have 'addressed' the 'stuff' going on in my life. 'Fear' of destitution, and strangers in my life were all but strangling me. I'm not out of the woods yet, but have 100% more control over my 'reactions' than I had a year ago. I am happy with everything I have, and must move forward to keep what I have, and the happiness in my life. In a way this is 'life-saving' karma you are giving us. Thanks...........Audrey

An article, called The New Science of Happiness, was in the Jan/ Feb issue of a magazine called Men's Health. It mentioned attending a Happiness Club meeting in an municipal office in New England.

I am fine. Growing and expanding beyond my old emotional boundaries. Working and making time to rest and recoup. I just got booked to do a "Dream Your Relationship Into Being" workshop and one on "I can Heal Myself and I Will" up in MA. I also joined a professional playwrights group and am trying my hand at it. I love the winter. It allows me to spend times indoors. I love listening to the winds howl off the river or sit back and listen to classical music. I really enjoy my own company.

Coping With Tragedy
Fighting Terror With Kindness
has been my personal response to terror. My wife, Shoshana, was murdered by a suicide bomber. She was one of over 100 victims that were killed or injured on August 9, 2001 at the Sbarro restaurant in Jerusalem. Sometimes I wonder whether telling my story can really help others. Since, the way I am coping with tragedy is so different than the norm, would anyone else understand it?

After my wife’s violent murder, I began a project to teach people how to be kinder. The project has just started to take off. At the moment, we have more than 40,000 subscribers on six continents to our "Daily Dose of Kindness" e-mail. Everyone who signs up for this e-mail list is also automatically signed up as an advisor. As I said before, I like having many advisors. Right now, I have over 40,000 "Kindness advisors".

Last week, one of my Kindness advisors sent me an e-mail link to an article in the New York Times about how medical researches have found that acts of kindness stimulate the brain in the same place that physical pleasures do. So now medical researchers have shown that doing kindness causes enjoyment. From this you can see one way that I cope with tragedy – I receive tremendous pleasure by promoting kindness.

My favorite author on kindness is Zelig Pliskin. In his book Kindness, he presents eighty-five techniques to find new opportunities to do kindness by improving yourself and improving the world around you. In one chapter he explains how you can feel the thrill of an international sports victory every day if you visualize 100,000 people applauding for you and cheering you on when you do an act of kindness. Studies have shown that our hormonal system has actual biochemical responses even though the victory is totally a figment of our imagination.

Shortly after my wife’s death, I prayed with great intensity to G-d to help me to make the world better. From the feedback I am getting from my kindness projects, it is clear that my prayers are being answered and that I am helping to make the world a little kinder – one person at a time. This feeling of Divine assistance combined with the biochemical responses to my imagined victory has given me tremendous emotional strength.

Kindness Transforms You

Developing a love for kindness transforms your life, just as you transform the lives of others.
Kindness is one of the pillars of the world. Every act of kindness elevates your character and makes you a kinder person. And, as you continue to increase your love for kindness, you increase the amount of joy in your life.

You protest the rain when it has already stopped raining, is that not so? You can let life be. You do not have to fight it. You do not have to balk at it. You don’t have to pan it. Make a decision to enjoy life. Drag your feet no longer. If you think life is a drag, who has been dragging it?

No longer pound your fists at life. How much more energy you will have when you let go of your supposed control of life, when you let life be. You will let life be of its own accord. It will make its own entrances and exits. You will be a watcher in the audience.

You will enjoy life more. To have more enjoyment in life doesn’t mean that you become passive and uncaring. It means you awaken and care in a more generous way. It means you can allow yourself to come alive. It means you will stop being a critic of life. You won’t referee life. You will become a star player, win or lose. In fact, you won’t even think of winning and losing. You will play the game with alacrity. You will enter the game with good will, and keep on playing.

I certainly enjoyed the meeting last night of the Smiling Single Seniors Happiness Club. It was nice to meet new people and to stretch again, by being present to other people and learning from them. Great group of people, very interesting, I enjoyed myself. When I arrived home last night, I sat and journaled about the evening, the people that I met and how nice everyone is.

I need to work at pleasing myself and doing the best that I can and to be happy with where I am at this time. I will always try to improve myself, which is a good thing, we all need to grow and learn from others and take what applies to us and leave the rest for whomever needs those other items.

I really enjoy conversing with you, you actually listen to what each of us has to say. Amazing, most people ask questions and you barely get the answer out and they are not even listening. Thanks for being you and for bringing happiness into each of our lives.

I do understand that happiness is the highest achievement. I just slide back, but I keep striding forward and hopefully take more step forwards than back. I love our groups of people as they are so diverse and fun to be around. Most of them have the happiness in place in their lives and I want it too. If you keep surrounding yourself with what you want you will get there. Enough for today, thanks again for all of your happiness. Cheerfully, Mary

Richard D. Banton, LCSW is calling it the Happiness Institute.

The club will initially be a free one hour discussion/seminar on a topic pertaining to happiness.

Richard hopes to also start a weekly S.M.A.R.T. recovery group in the near future as well as an alternative to AA. Check out www.smartrecovery.org sometime when you get a chance.

SMART Recovery® is recognized by the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Center for Health Care Evaluation, The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), US Department of Health and Human Services, American Society of Addiction Medicine.
While I will call it that because it’s recognized as a valid alternative to AA, I suspect that many of the meetings will be on happiness as well.

Happiness is an inner state of well being. A state that enables you to profit from your highest thoughts, intelligence, wisdom, awareness, common sense, emotions, health, and spiritual values.

Happiness is one of the most important things in your life.

Happiness does wonders for your soul. Now is the time to learn to use happiness in dealing with challenges and difficult people in your life so you can develop the strength to prevail.

Practice "Premeditated Happiness," because happiness is an issue of power. We give our power to others for many reasons, and we think that they will make us happy. The truth is that we have given others power over ourselves. We can now take our power back in order to be happy again.
